What can I do to make the best use of my time with my doctor?
Rank your list of concerns and questions by importance and talk about the most important items first. If you put off talking about the items that are bothering you most, you may run out of time to talk about them during the visit. Afterwards, if you have time, you can talk about the other things on your list.
Another way to make the best use of your time is to use your visit plan to stick to the point. Your doctor may not have a lot of time to talk with you. Therefore, it is important for you to stay focused on what you planned to talk about. For example, give a brief summary of what is bothering you most, when the symptom started, how often it happens, and if it is getting worse or better.
What should I include when I describe a symptom to my doctor?
Your description should include what the symptom is, when it started, when it occurs, how long it lasts, how often you have it, and anything that makes it worse or better. Try to be as specific as possible.
How honest should I be with my doctor?
You may want to say what you think your doctor wants to hear, like you are smoking less or eating healthier foods. It is important to tell your doctor the truth, even if it is embarrassing. Your doctor can best help you only when he or she knows what is really going on.
Also, be honest with your doctor about how you feel about your visit. Tell your doctor if you feel rushed, worried that you didn’t have enough time, or uncomfortable with your visit. You can offer to come back for a second visit to talk more about your health concerns.
Remember, your doctor may not be able to answer all of your questions.
Most doctors will tell you when they do not have answers. They may be able to help you find the information you need or refer you to another doctor, a specialist, who can answer your questions.
What conditions do dermatologists treat?
Dermatologists can treat a wide range of conditions affecting the skin, hair and nails, including, but not limited to, acne, psoriasis, rosacea, skin cancer, wrinkles, sun spots, pigmentation problems, warts, rashes, bacterial or fungal skin and nail infections, spider and varicose veins, and sun damage.
What can I expect at my first visit?
After conducting a thorough review of your medical history which may be supplemented by any available records, and an appropriate physical exam, your doctor will make a diagnosis and then review the detailed treatment plan and education with you. We encourage you to ask relevant questions, and we will be glad to address any concerns you may have.
What is cosmetic dermatology?
All dermatologists receive training in:
- Medical dermatology: Diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases that affect the skin, hair and nails.
- Dermatopathology: Diagnose diseases that affect the skin, hair, and nails by removing a sample and examining the sample with a microscope.
- Surgical dermatology: Treat diseases that affect the skin, hair, and nails by using a surgical procedure.
- Cosmetic dermatology: Treat the skin, hair, or nails using a treatment that is meant to improve a patient’s appearance rather than treat a disease.
Many dermatologists perform all of the above. Examples of treatments dermatologists perform that fall into the area of cosmetic dermatology include:
- Surgery to diminish acne scars.
- Injecting fillers and botulinum toxins to give an aging face a more youthful appearance.
- Laser surgery to diminish or remove small veins, age spots, tattoos, or wrinkles.
Because of their unique training, dermatologists have the medical knowledge and skills necessary to safely perform many cosmetic procedures.
How much does dermatologic treatment cost?
As with any medical treatment, costs vary, depending upon the scale and severity of the condition, as well as the treatment method. However, many medical dermatology treatments are covered under insurance plans, and we will help ensure you receive maximum benefits. For treatments not covered, we also offer a range of convenient payment options. We will work hard to make sure that your skin treatments are affordable!
